Family Law
Legal Advocacy for Every Stage
of Your Family Matter
Family law issues do not always have to become courtroom battles. Whether you need to create a custody agreement, modify child support, update a parenting schedule, or formalize an arrangement that is no longer working, Ahmed Law & Mediation helps families find practical legal solutions with as little unnecessary conflict as possible.
Our attorneys represent and guide clients in New York City and Westchester County in custody, parenting time, child support, and modification matters. Whenever possible, we help clients resolve issues through mediation or negotiated agreements that can be filed with the court on consent. When litigation is necessary, we are prepared to advocate for you.
We understand that every family situation is different — and that not every client has been through a divorce. We regularly work with parents who need to establish an initial custody or support order, modify an existing arrangement, or formalize something that has been handled informally up to now.

A different approach
Family law does not always mean going to court.
Many people assume that modifying custody or child support automatically requires a court appearance, contested motions, and separate attorneys. That is not always the case. When both parties are willing to work together, they may be able to reach an agreement through mediation, formalize that agreement in writing, and file it with the court on consent — so it becomes a court order without unnecessary conflict or litigation.
Ahmed Law & Mediation helps clients understand when this path is available, what it looks like in practice, and how to move through it efficiently. When court is unavoidable, we are prepared to represent you directly.
Practice areas
Family Law Services We Provide
Our family law practice focuses on custody, parenting time, child support, and related modification matters. We serve both married and unmarried parents and work with clients at every stage — from establishing an initial order to revisiting an arrangement that no longer fits.
Family Law Mediation
In many custody, parenting time, child support, and modification matters, both parties do not need to hire separate attorneys and litigate in court. Family law mediation allows both parties to work with one neutral attorney-mediator — Talaiya A. Ahmed — to discuss the issues, reach a workable agreement, and formalize it in a way that can be filed with the court as a consent order. Mediation tends to be faster, less costly, and less adversarial than contested litigation, and it allows families to keep important decisions in their own hands rather than leaving them to a judge.
Child Custody and Parenting Time
Custody and parenting time decisions directly affect your children's day-to-day lives and your role as a parent. We assist clients in establishing initial custody arrangements, addressing parenting schedules, and resolving disputes about decision-making. We work with both married and unmarried parents — including those who have never had a formal custody order in place. Our approach focuses on helping parents reach workable arrangements through mediation or negotiation whenever possible, and on clear, effective advocacy when court is necessary.
Child Support
Child support matters arise in many different circumstances — not only in divorce. We work with clients who need to establish an initial child support order, address situations where no formal order currently exists, or navigate voluntary payment arrangements that are no longer reliable. We help clients understand how New York's child support guidelines apply to their specific situation and what options are available to create or formalize a workable support arrangement.
Child Support Modifications
When income changes, parenting schedules shift, or a voluntary arrangement stops working, a child support modification may be appropriate. Many clients search for "child support modification" because they need to change an existing order — not because they are going through a new divorce. We help clients understand whether a modification is available under New York law, what the process looks like, and whether it can be handled by agreement rather than through contested court proceedings.
Custody Modifications
Parenting arrangements that worked well at the time they were created may no longer fit a family's current needs. When circumstances have changed significantly — whether due to a parent's relocation, changes in a child's needs, or a shift in the existing parenting schedule — a custody modification may be appropriate. In many cases, modifications can be handled through agreement, mediation, and a consent filing with the court. When that is not possible, we are prepared to represent clients in contested modification proceedings.
Divorce and Related Family Law Issues
When divorce involves custody, parenting time, or child support matters, those issues require careful, focused attention. We assist clients in addressing the family law components of divorce proceedings and help ensure that any agreements or orders entered reflect practical, workable arrangements for the family going forward.
Litigation When Agreement Is Not Possible
We work hard to help families resolve custody, parenting, and support issues in a way that keeps control with the people who know the family best. When parents can reach an agreement through mediation or negotiation, they can often avoid unnecessary court conflict, reduce costs, and keep major decisions about their children out of the hands of a judge. When litigation is necessary, our attorneys are prepared to advocate firmly and effectively on your behalf.
Understanding your options
Two Paths for Resolving Custody and Support Issues
Whether you are establishing an initial custody arrangement, modifying child support, or formalizing a parenting schedule, there are generally two routes available. Understanding the difference can help you make a more informed decision about how to proceed.
Mediation and Agreement Route
- Work with one neutral mediator rather than two opposing attorneys
- Discuss custody, parenting time, or support issues in a structured, private setting
- Reach an agreement without unnecessary court conflict
- File the agreement with the court on consent
- The agreement becomes a court order once approved
- In many cases, no contested court appearance is required
- Helps families save time, reduce costs, and maintain more control over the outcome
- Works for initial orders, modifications, and parenting schedule changes
Litigation Route
- Each party may retain separate counsel
- Formal petitions or motions are filed with the court
- A judge may make decisions if the parties cannot reach agreement
- The process can take longer and involve greater legal costs
- May be necessary when one party will not participate in good faith
- May be required when safety or serious parental fitness concerns are present
- The appropriate path when the other party refuses to engage reasonably
Our approach
What to Expect When You Work With Us
A Consultation That Clarifies Your Options
Your first consultation is not a sales pitch — it is a working conversation. We listen to your situation, explain how New York law applies, and help you understand whether your matter may be resolved through mediation, a negotiated agreement, a consent filing, or formal litigation.
A Strategy Based on the Level of Conflict
Some cases can be resolved cooperatively with relatively little legal intervention. Others require stronger advocacy from the start. We build a legal strategy based on the facts, the other party's position, and your goals — not a one-size-fits-all approach.
A Focus on Keeping Control Where Possible
When families can reach an agreement, they keep control over decisions that matter — parenting schedules, support amounts, and how transitions are handled. We help clients pursue that outcome whenever it is realistic and in their best interest.
Mediation and Consent Orders When Appropriate
When both parties are willing to work together, we can guide you through the mediation process, help you reach a formal written agreement, and file it with the court on consent so it becomes an enforceable court order — often without a contested appearance.
Litigation When Necessary
When the other party will not engage in good faith, or when the stakes require it, we are prepared to represent you in court. Our attorneys bring clear, effective advocacy to contested hearings and proceedings in New York family courts.
